Organization is the Key to Zen Living

Though life is not always perfect in my household, it is certainly organized! I had two conversations recently with friends in which they asked how I get everything done (and maintain my sanity). I explained to them how I organize my life and I thought I'd share it with all of you. 

To put my busy life in perspective, I have three kids who are four and under, I own Red Mango Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies, teach group exercise at the Y and blog and freelance for Metroparent. So, I have a few balls in the air. In spite of this, my home is always clean and my chores are always done. Why? The following is how I organize my life. I am extremely Type A and this schedule keeps me on task so that I can accomplish my chores while also enjoying my family and fulfilling my work commitments. I recognize that this may not work for everyone but if this can help you in anyway, I glad!

NOTE: I get up early and start my chores early so that I can get them done and out of the way. I stick to this schedule week-after-week and the routine allows me to get everything finished. 


1. Vacuum and clean hardwood flooring

2. Laundry (I always wash the kids clothes first so that I can put it away first in the event that I'm still doing laundry when the baby has to go down for her nap. I don't have access to her room, so hopefully her clothes are already put away).

3. Change sheets and wash dirty ones

4. Make one large meal to last a few days. I've been using my crockpot a lot recently and making homemade soups. 


1. Deep clean of my entire house. Wash all rags and cleaning utensils.

2. Gather garbage from around the house for pickup on Tuesday. 

Tuesday and Thursday:

1. Laundry (I think doing laundry three times a week allows me to not become overwhelmed by too many loads. Also, you don't need to buy 10 pairs of pjs (or jeans, undies, etc.) for your kids when you wash often, as they always have a clean pair. 


1. Cut the grass and weed.


1. Use the dustbuster after the kids eat and to clean up dog hair (black lab who sheds a lot).

2. Deep clean the toddler potties.

3. Make beds and tidy up rooms. 

I also don't allow the kids to play in a new area of the house without picking up their toys first. They never go to bed without the house being cleaned, books being put away, etc. I abide by the same rules in that I never go to bed with dirty dishes in the sink or laundry needing to be put away. When I wake up in the morning to a clean house, it's going to be a good day!
